Innerhalb der römisch-katholischen Kirche hat der Begriff der Teilkirche verschiedene kirchenrechtliche Bedeutungen. Der Begriff wird aber auch weiterführend benutzt, wie in der Erklärung Dominus Iesus der Kongregation für die Glaubenslehre:

1. Partikularkirche (CIC: ecclesia particularis), eine Diözese oder dieser gleichgestellte Einheit;
2. Kirche eigenen Rechts (CIC: ecclesia sui iuris, CCEO: ecclesia sui iuris), eine Teilkirche eigenen Rechts.
